WELL !!! What can be said of our adventure to Mongolia ? I personally found it fascinating, the contrast of the landscapes, the -25 degrees Celsius temperatures, the unequivocal transformation of a Country unfold before your eyes, certainly took us off the beaten track.
I was 21 yrs old in 1991 so seeing the footage of a ‘Socialist’ (looked more like Communism to me)’ Mongolia embrace ‘democracy’ ‘technology’ and ‘pop dance music’ (the Pete Waterman kind) with Mc Hammer and Vanilla Ice (as in Ice Ice Baby) being referred to as ‘Hip Hop’ had me worried, VERY worried!!!
The film followed the journeys of Quiza (who took the contract from the Alcohol company), Gennie (1st Female rapper in Mongolia) and Gee (from the real Mongolian ‘Hood’) in their search for a youth culture that will inspire. Gennie’s Grandmother herself is a well known traditional Singer and encouraged her grand daughters quest, Quiza brings ‘Mongolian Throat singing’ to centre stage & Gee ‘keeps it real’ rapping about ‘despair in society’ and working as an Ambassador for Amnesty International !!!
If I had only one sentence I would say this , “The Epic Singer says that Hip Hop originated in Mongolia, & Gennie says it costs NOTHING TO DREAM !!! Well worth a watch” (IMHO of course 😉 )
